Workin' on Saturday night

This weekend we met our new niece Norah, who is exceptionally beautiful. Like her mother. Also, I learned to play Rummikub. It's really fun. I am totally in the mood to cuddle [with Neil] in blankets tomorrow and watch Back to the Future. Did you know that members of Congress have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to their party campaign coffers? Of course, it comes out of their own coffers, which isn't as bad as if it came out of their wallets. The money then goes to support candidates in the tightest of races throughout the country. Isn't that kind of communistic? But the money=political stature system we have right now is totally capitalistic. So it's communism within capitalism. Please correct this assertion, via comment, if you have better information. Senators apparently are not expected to pay. Speaking of, John McCain supports Prop 107, which not only would make same-sex marriage illegal (redundant, since it already is illegal), but apparently would retract any domestic-partnership benefits currently in place for heterosexual couples. Would that anti-same-sex-marriage activists would go feed children or something.

We love rummikub too. Sometimes we bust it out when there's nothing on t.v. Mark wins 99.9% of the time.

"money=political stature" is not "capitalistic". A true capitalist system has separation of economy and state, so that political figures can't make economic decisions, so they can't favor (or punish) businesses/groups of people, so they aren't subject to bribes or corruption. The only legitimate functions of goverment are to "outlaw the initiation of force" by providing security (in the form of police, military, court system) that allows a free market to flourish.

So what you're saying is that our current political system isn't capitalistic? What is it called when it's impossible to gain political stature without obscene sums of money?

Um, how was your halloween party?

It was fun. Yesterday I still had a sparkle on my face, even after showering. I had a couple of marshmallows, although they weren't roasted.

yeah, it isn't anywhere near a fully capitalist economy. "capitalism" doesn't have anything to do with "having obscene amounts of money" to be in government... where do you get this stuff? What's an obscene sum of money, by the way?

It's a shame there is money to be made during service in gov't by delivering or witholding favors in the form of preferential tax treatment or punishment (e.g., increased taxes or regulatory hurdles for your business). The only reason this is true is because of the breach of the separation of economy and state (which was never part of our gov't. I'm not longing for the good old days of the late 1700's). So if you hate the money in politics, why not attack the true cause of it: the fact that gov't has the (illegitimate) power to hand out favors or punishment to businesses or groups of people totally arbitrarily?
